 About

More Than A Marathon is a project created through the NYCity News Service, a student-powered service at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism. The pop-up news site aims to go beyond the race results to get a deeper sense of the characters and histories surrounding the marathon that sees more than 50,000 runners traverse the five boroughs.

Originating from a class project, a dozen student journalists from the school’s Editing the News class have worked with students to showcase their on-the-ground reporting on the marathon. This package of stories includes a race vigilante who tracks cheaters, a look at marathoners who race despite complications with lung disease, and tales from the competitors who finish last.

This colorful race reporting has been made through original photos, insightful data journalism and a pair of articles in Spanish.
